Development of Battery Power Tools: FEIHU’s Insights About Li-ion Tools

In the modern era, battery-powered tools are game changers due to the flexibility and mobility they provide, qualities that are enhanced even further with new developments in lithium-ion battery technology. Everyone from DIYers to professionals working at a job site can appreciate the improvement in workflow efficiency afforded by a battery power tool. No longer do you have to worry about onsite power generation or extension cords, and a single battery can be used in multiple tools- everything from a drill to a chainsaw.

When it comes to delivering precision-made and reliable tools for customers who want the best, we at FEIHU cut no corners. Our highly automated production lines combine the best aspects of man and machine to create tools that you can rely on to get the job done, time after time. FEIHU is committed to becoming a global leader in the design and manufacture of lithium electric tools.

Evolution of Battery Power Tools: Three Types of Power Tool Batteries

To better understand why FEIHU is so committed to pushing battery power tool design forward in the lithium-ion space, we must first take a look at how the industry got here. Unsurprisingly, the road was long and full of hurdles. Before Li-ion, there were two highly popular battery technologies known as Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Metal Hydride. These were used in all sorts of consumer electronics and previous-generation tools. If you grew up during the 90s and early 2000s, before the age of lithium-electric tools, you might have used one of these older devices. Let’s examine each battery chemistry in more detail, with the pros and cons-

  • Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd)

For the longest time, nickel-cadmium was the most common battery chemistry used by power tool manufacturers. It was preferred due to its robust nature and ability to deliver high current flow, even in deep discharge applications. Often, sintered electrodes would be used to reduce internal resistance and make NiCd batteries more stable at high-power loads. And good NiCd batteries can last over 1000 cycles, with a calendar lifetime of more than 10 years. They are also quite good at extreme temperature ranges, everything from under zero (freezing) to over 60° C. And finally, they are quite cheap since you don’t require expensive logic circuits to regulate discharge rates and battery temperature.

However, that's where the good news ends. Nickel-Cadmium has a much lower energy density compared to lithium-ion and even NiMH. It also has a high self-discharge rate. So, if you're a casual user and only take out your cordless drill/ chainsaw a couple of times each year, you can lose as much as 20% charge in one month from the battery just sitting around. NiCd also suffers from the "memory effect," which means the battery needs to be completely discharged before recharging, or it will not charge to full capacity.

  • Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)

In terms of energy density, NiMH is between NiCd and Li-ion. So you can get more voltage and current, resulting in higher torque and RPM figures for your cordless tools. However, the self-discharge rates are even higher than NiCd, and these batteries perform worse at low temperatures. High-power discharge significantly reduces the number of cycles before the battery is functionally useless.

  • Lithium-ion (Li-ion)

Today, lithium-ion is the obvious choice for every modern battery power tool. While initial adoption was slow and expensive due to the requirement for new manufacturing techniques and battery management circuits, modern lithium batteries are quite cheap and readily available. It has the highest energy density, so you get much longer runtimes. Li-ion batteries are also known for their fast recharge speeds, so your overall workflow efficiency is increased as there's less downtime between shifts. Self-discharge rates are very low, which makes these good for storage if you're a casual user. Lithium-ion cells are also excellent at high discharge rates, making them suitable for tools that draw lots of current, like routers and table saws.

FEIHU’s Insights Into Li-ion Power Tools

In 2021, the global power tools market was valued at US $26.61 billion. In 2023, it’s valued at $27.52 billion and is expected to hit $36.82 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 4.3%.[1] The battery power tool market constitutes a massive chunk of this overall valuation, and it will only keep growing. As the construction industry grows and demand increases for new infrastructure in emerging markets, demand for cordless tools will keep growing. Advances in lithium-ion batteries and DC motors will only accelerate this shift towards cordless tools.

FEIHU was created to meet growing industry demands for power tools, with the goal of delivering products that are versatile and reliable yet cheap and readily available. To make and sell power tools wholesale, FEIHU needed a highly advanced manufacturing base and massive storage capacity. We also took feedback from various industry professionals, as well as average homeowners and DIYers, on what they wanted from their ideal power tool.

Most people use cordless lithium-ion tools for the convenience they provide. Nobody wants to pull out an extension cord and go searching for an outlet if they're just trying to fix a sink or rig up a shelf in the attic. This convenience and the ability to work anytime anywhere is why cordless tools are gaining in popularity.

FEIHU seeks to satisfy this industry requirement by delivering innovative and affordable design solutions for everyone. Whether you're an individual or a private label who wishes to rebrand our products as your own to cut down on design and manufacturing costs- we've got you covered. FEIHU has products for prosumers, professionals, and everyone in between.
